Sumbawanga, Tanzania — Malaika Social Organization (MASO) has launched a targeted multi-school intervention titled 'Safeguarding the Future of the Girl Child' to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV), teenage pregnancy, and high-risk social exposures among secondary school girls across Sumbawanga Municipal Council.

The Critical Challenge

As Sumbawanga undergoes rapid urban growth, secondary schools situated in peri-urban corridors face increasing proximity to nightclubs, informal guest houses, and high-risk entertainment zones. This environment has disproportionately exposed adolescent female students to exploitation, substance abuse, and peer pressure, while school-based counseling desks frequently lack specialized training.
