Nkasi District, Rukwa — Malaika Social Organization is proud to announce the successful completion and official handover of the Kantawa Water Source Protection Project in Kipande Ward, Nkasi District.
From Contaminated Stream to Protected Spring
For decades, Kantawa residents relied on an open, muddy natural runoff that was regularly trampled by livestock and contaminated during monsoon rains. Waterborne illnesses such as typhoid, amoebiasis, and chronic diarrhea were widespread, particularly impacting primary school students whose attendance suffered severely.
MASO's engineering team, working shoulder-to-shoulder with local village artisans and youth volunteers, executed a comprehensive four-phase construction plan:
- Spring Excavation & Foundation: Clearing silt down to the impermeable rock layer and laying coarse gravel filter beds.
- Masonry Catchment Chamber: Constructing heavy stone-and-cement barrier walls to encapsulate the spring discharge point.
- Sedimentation & Distribution Tank: Filtering sediment and routing pressurized water through underground PVC conduits to multi-tap public stations.
- Fencing & Drainage: Installing perimeter security fencing to exclude grazing animals and constructing concrete runoff drainage troughs.
"Our children no longer have to drink cloudy water or walk miles before school. This water project has given our village our dignity back." — Village Elder, Kantawa
